The house I just moved in to has a room prewired for home theater. When I remove the face plates, there are four wires at each location (red, black, blue, and green). How do I connect my speakers when I only have red and black inputs on each of them? Do I just ignore the blue and green? Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide. It is greatly appreciated.

in order to save time and money many installations use 4 conductor wire. So the wire is looped from the receiver location to one speaker location, then to the next. However one set of wires is spliced and set aside for one speaker. Hope that makes sense. Typically it is red/black for the right speaker and white/green for the left. You may want to have a technician tone out the wires to verify this though.

As long as both ends are the same you can do it that way, us the red and black only.

This is usually 16/4 or 4 wires of 16 gauge. They can also be 14/4 or 12/4. This is the most flexible method of wiring, it allows you more options. lower the first number the thicker the wire and the more power it can handle.

If you only have one speaker at each location then i would actually combine the red and white for the positive and the black and green for the negative. May as well create a lower (thicker) gauge wire since you have it, some think it sounds better.

You can use any 2 of the 4 wires, as long as you use the same color on each end. So yes use the red and black to avoid confusion.

There must be another end to the wires that connects to the speaker output of the amplifier. You have to find that, then just make sure the color you connect the amp output to matches the speaker you want to drive.
