Apathy being abandonment...wouldn't that be just like the Christian's claim that God would abandon (eternal damnation)? them if they don't swear that Jesus was perfect on earth and better than everyone else for all time?

You entire question is based upon an incorrect usage of the word apathy.

Apathy is the state of indifference towards emotion, of others as well as your own.

"–noun, plural -thies.
1. absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement.
2. lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting.
3. Also, ap‧a‧thei‧a, ap‧a‧thi‧a /ˌæpəˈθiə/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ap-uh-thee-uh] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation. Stoicism. freedom from emotion of any kind. "

Now, under the proper use, I'll answer your question:

The Christian God is encapable of apathy, as his entire being and existence is comprised of the desires to create man, the desires to be worshipped, and the desires to gain the faith of his creations. He is compassionate, and loves unconditionally. He weeps for his lost. According to the bible, it pains him greatly for his "children" to be sent to Hell. He sent his only son as a sacrifice for humans, but this is the most anyone can do. He created us with freedom of will and choice.

It's like a parent to a child, with the exception that humans cannot love unconditionally. There will always be limitations of our emotions. God, however, is not indifferent to the condition of someone's soul regardless of how sinful and far from him they may become.

No. Apathy is the result of lazyness or having other priorities.
