Buy some ..."Liquid No Sand"...wash the wood down with it using a dry rag dipped in it along with steel wool. It will loosen & dull the shine. Take a very fine sand paper over it lightly & recoat with a very low gloss sealant. Water based polyurethane works best & dries fast. (You will need some kind of sealer for future cleanings.) Let it dry & put another coat of sealant on. Just get the least shinyest poly you can find. Hope this helps.

Deglosser to cut the "slickness" so the paint will stick.. But like someone said above use a quality primer , I used to use a oil one on old kitchen cabinets , but a water base one will be fine so long as it for wood.. and let it dry and light sand if your one of those people that to work .. then paint.. if your in the bay area ,, www.joethehousepainter.com

Light sand them with sand paper and then wipe them of with a old towel and put on a matte finish in clear.

Just cover it with a satin finish of the same kind, you don't have to remove anything.
