Hmmm. Largely depends on the person. It could mean, "I want someone smart enough to earn a decent living so I don't have to pay for everything." Or, "Intelligence has a genetic component, and I want smart kids (who can support me in my old age)."
Or it could mean, "I want someone smart enough to figure out what I am saying even when I don't say it very clearly."
I think being smart just means being able to solve problems easily and quickly. So, you can be smart in nuclear physics, but be totally stupid at balancing your checkbook. It depends on what kind of intelligence the person is looking for in a mate.
The only way to find out is to ask. You may not have what they want, but it will probably make you smarter so the next time you meet someone looking for intelligence . . . (-:.
Personally, I think kindness and a sense of humor outranks intelligence anyday. Smart but cruel is just an evil combination.

I think the notion of intelligence varies a lot from person to person. To some, it's someone with similar interests and likes and dislikes; to others, it's someone with whom they can discuss world events, the stock market, politics, etc. And maybe to others, it's just someone who's a bit more worldly. How do you tell if someone's smart? Well, I guess if they go around sticking keys in lightsockets, we'll know they're not!

You can tell by the way they present themselves. If they continue to make the same mistakes over and over, they are obviously not intelligent. Another way to tell, is if they ask stupid questions, they are not intelligent.

What they REALLY mean, is that they want someone who is equally as smart (or Dumb) as themselves. I have an extremely high IQ, it doesn't mean I'm "Smart." People are most comfortable when they date and marry within their own socio-economic status. Instead, try dating one up.

Usually by the way they talk and how they present themselves. Like someone that says yes instead of yeah, or dinner instead of supper....is obviously more intelligent.
