From Black to brown is very difficult since any brown colour will just darken your hair more. I would suggest you lighten your first with a red colour... and then darken it with a dark brown.

Hmm. As far as a color, I'd say to just go with your personal skin coloring/undertones to determine which shade would work best for you.
I used to regularly dye my hair jet-jet-black, and I unfortunately never had much luck with getting the permanent color to look decent after I wanted a different color--even if it faded. I'd suggest getting a consultation at a salon to see the best thing to do for the hair. Permanent black dyes are some of the hardest to change around once in place, so unless you used a semi-temporary it might help to get some professional help with this one.
But if the shade that you want to change it to isn't that far from black anyway, you should be ok with a box color. If your desired shade is more than two away from black, what could happen is that the lighter brown won't properly lift the pre-existing color and the resulting color might be a bit off.
As far as specific drugstore brands to buy, I've always had good luck with Feria and Herbal Essences, but Feria is one of those YMMV (your mileage may vary) brands as I've read that a lot of people had bad results with that one.
Good luck!

I have done this before. You have to strip all the color out of your hair before dying it brown. There are products available in the stores but I recommend leaving it to a professional, it's not a simple thing to do and you don't want to end up damaging your hair.
(Lol, after stripping my hair and dying it brown several times to cover the blonde, I soon ended up going back to black! What a waste of time and money!! Oh boy, I am brilliant, really)

You are apt to end up with green hair unless you choose a shade of brown that has red undertones. If you call the Clairol 800 number, they will give you free advice on what color to buy to achieve the results you want. Good luck.

You will prolly have trouble with a brown unless you give it a bleach wash first. If I were you I would check with a beautician. I had my hair dyed dark and she put too much black in it and I wanted it lighter so I had to wait 2 weeks and then she put a bleach wash on it. (lightly bleached it) then she dyed it the dark brown after the bleach wash. She was afraid I would turn red but it was o.k.

in my professional oppinion, and save alot of heart ache, goto have it done in a salon.because ,#1. color doesn't lighten colr ,it only makes it darker.#2 first step is to remove the existing color, by using either a color remover with 10 or 20 volume peroxide.then when you have done that step ,then and only than will it be possible to re-color your hair to the desired level & depth that you wish to wear. good luck.
