There are so many different mental illness that I think you're best looking at the mental health website (link below). There's a search box on the home page where you can list any particular symptom that may be worrying you. I remember the first time I had depression, I didn't really know what it was until I'd bought a book about it. I hope the website helps.

taliking from personal experience as i am just recovering from being in hospital 4 years for mental illness, there are so many and you should never try to match up one thing to an illness because the same trait may be visble in 2 illnessses or even 3.
some types of symptoms inc:

OCD - (otherwise known as obsessive compulsive disorder) washing hands quite alot, having to do things in a certain way ( from experience this is because the sufferer will think something is going to happen to them or loved ones if they dont do it) having to do things ritualised eg when the sufferer eats there breakfast in the morning they will have to have lets say 2 of everything inc drinks. they will also eat it in a set manner which to us can look pretty disgusting but to the sufferer they have to do it.

PTSD - (post traumatic stress syndrome) being very emotional at the slightes thing, going quiet, shakey, and possibly screaming or shouting out maybe even in public. this is what is known as a flashback and its when the sufferer relives the traumatic event be it rape murder passing of a loved one car crash. anything that the mind finds traumatic can cause ptsd.

DEPRESSION can lead to the sufferer feeling tired all the time, or maybe being asleep most of the time. they will loose interest in things that they used to enjoy doing eg swimming or listening to music. they may feel theres no hope and that its not worth carrying on with life. they may have suicidal ideation.

there are many more but i hope the few i have done will help you.

I don't know why these ppl think it's so funny to make fun of menal ilnness. some signs of mental illness are depressed mood longer than normal. obsessive thoughts you have to act on just so you can get on with your life, not viewing yourself as a human being but a worthless waste of life.hearing things, seeing things that are not there. self mutilation, beliveing your the most important person in the world like as important as the president. thinking you have lots of money when you dont. those last things i mentioned is a illness called bipolar. there are a lot more but those were the things i could think of off the top of my head

this is a loaded question. There are many forms of mental illness. dual diagnosis. obsessive compulsive disorder. bipolar
they are shown when the individual is doing stuff out of the normal range of development. Babies are tested the minute they are born with an APGAR test and this is repeated after 5 minutes then in a couple of days they get a more though test NBAS done to check the levels of development. Mental illness is when neurons in the brain are not connecting and there are many factors that lead to this just like many factors of mental illness.

speaking from personal experiences of friends, some people's personality changes dramatically. Other can appear together in public but be a complete mess inside. Drugs, head injuries, lack of sleep & streets can have the same symptoms of a mental illness and can be temporary.
