I know that some women get fired as soon as they tell their bosses they are pregnant even though they can carry out thier duties for many more months. And some can't get hired after that. Any stories?

I'm doing this for school and was hoping for some personal answers before i get statistics- that's all. I wasn't fired for being pregnant- I had to quit the moment I found out because it was too dangerous a job and school is what prevented me from finding another. I definately know that it is illegal, but some employers can come back and say that they were fired for other reasons and be protected.

With my 1st pregnancy, I got a job in my 2nd trimester and did not tell them I was pregnant since I was not showing. It wasnt till I started showing when they finally knew what was up. There are places who would rather not hire pregnant women but there are still places who will hire you. Try video stores, small places like that don't require much work and have no problem if you are pregnant. Places who fire you because you are pregnant should be reported as they should be an EOE. I worked up until my last month. I also had preterm contractions and was still working but my boss did not fire me and since then all they allowed me to do while working was sit in a chair, eat and help customers.

I haven't had children, but that is VERY illegal. They can choose not to hire you, but they CANNOT fire you because you get pregnant if you can still do your job. Any woman that has had that happen to them recently needs to find a good lawyer and sue for wrongful termination. A company is REQUIRED by law to offer at least 12 weeks of maturnity leave to a mother, and if she can do the job up until birth, then they cannot terminate her for that reason. If she plans to leave at the end of the pregnancy though, they may have a ligitimate right to ask her to go ahead and leave so that she doesn't milk them for the 12 weeks at the end, but that is still a maybe.

The sad thing is though, a lot of people do not know their rights, and company's take advantage of it lots of times.

Its against the law in some states to fired because your pregnant. Also, after birth, the law says that your still entitle to your original job position. Some employers go around this by firing people for "other reasons".

Tip

During an interview, in some states, an empoyer is not allowed to ask you if your pregnant.

A friend of my brother's had a high-paying job doing something when she went on maternity leave. A co-worker and friend called her to let her know that the company had replaced her while she was gone. She and her husband sued. They now have a vacation house in a very posh resort along the shore. Oh...and she didn't have to work until she was ready to find another job.

I don't have exactly a getting fired story, but I was talking with my boss and she told me that she started her business after being fed-up with being underminded and disrespected while she was pregnant at her job. She quit, started her business from her house, and now has 2 employees (who she pays quite well :D ) and doesn't have to deal with any of the crap she had to before.
