In a bad way lately. In the 1960's it was instrumental in fighting segregation and racism. In the years 1980 and on it has been a big force in fighting women's rights gay rights and stem cell research. Religion has actually sided with racist save perhaps the Los Angeles Catholic arch dieocy.
Religion is big business. It makes money off of superstition fear and fools who act like sheep. People who have never though anything out. Most religious people are not really thinking outside of the box. They never think what if all this is nonsense. Well it is. It should have no place in government. Now the idea of ethics such as treating your neighbor well and not discriminating are fundamentals of a decent society. Religion acts to divide people and therefore is worthless. It's not the religion it's the relationship! Until they get this they should stick their heads in the sand. Oh wait a minute they already have. Maybe they should study learn and pay attention to what matters and not a lot of nonsense.

If you want to understand how religion can effect government, look at Islam in Saudi Arabia, or look at the Kings of Europe and the Pope in the Middle Ages. There is no specific religion driving the government of the US. In general it is Christianity, but quite wide varieties of that broad religion. There is no requirement to be of a certain denomination to run for office
in the US.

it continually has unwanted consequences in a democracy because of the fact the desire of a few is pushed on the government. The few have followers yet incredibly some the time does no longer comply with the extremes of the non secular leaders like James Dobson. certainly i think of if human beings incredibly knew the Dobson guy they could make him close his concentration crew. that's the non secular communities like this armed camp in Colorado that relatively make unfavourable impacts on government. The PTL and different have compelled the government to think approximately stupid issues like merry Christmas and chuffed holiday particularly of actual themes. government could be freed from the littleness of the non secular Bigots that talk for such incredibly some and Do no longer something extra effective than take the peoples money for their on pleasures..

The US government was based on christian principals brought over from Europe by the Quakers, puritans and pilgrims as they sought religious freedom. The first inklings of a government set up in this land was the Mayflower Compact in 1620. It gave recognition to God that this planting a Colony in Virginia was to to give glory to God and to advance the Christian faith. Their acknowledgment of God and all that he had done for them is a testimony to their faith and a subsequent blessing to all that followed in their footsteps to the new world. A land blessed by God even today.

The religion effects the government pretty badly, for instance one of americas mottos is " In god we trust." In Dubai they have Ramadan (A religious thing where you can not eat when the sun is shining) and various other things.

Unfortunately, lately, it seems to be affecting it waaaaaaaay too much! It informs every one of George Bush's decisions as he is a radical fundamental christian and is trying to help bring about the end of the world... (NOT KIDDING... he really believes this stuff!! See links below... those are just a few.. there are plenty of documented interviews that are terrifying, frankly).

When religion controlled the governments in Europe, it was called the "Dark Ages". Fitting, isn't it?

Right now, it really doens't that much. People refuse to listen to religious teachings, and fail to aknowledge that our gocernment is based on faith and religious teachings.
Separation of church and state was put there to keep the state out of the church, not to keep the church out of the state. They didn't want it to be a government mandadted religion as it had been in England, that's the whole reason they left.

Makes it radical. When someone has a certain belief he makes everyone else believe the way he does. Actually they don't but he tries. Where religion is ruling the country nothing is ever done.
