Many People living in an English speaking society basically do not feel the need to know another language as the places they choose to go will either speak English or undrstand somethings. Not all 'foreigners' speak English in many countries no one speaks English, only in the tourist areas of the country will you find people that speak english ... or if they go to an English speaking country they will learn. We learn languages that we are interested in... it is just that our education system does not encourage people to pick up a second language or appreciate the benefits of knowing one. Once we have a decent education system then the rest of the English speaking population will give a hoot.

That's not very accurate and it's also a sweeping generalisation. Firstly, the foreigners you meet are often working or studying and have learned English so that they can achieve their aims and work in a foreign environment.. Not all foreigners speak English by any means.
Secondly, English is the world's largest second language. People learn to speak it so that they can talk to anyone else in the world, not necessarily native speakers of English - half of whom can't speak English properly anyway :-).
As a native speaker I feel it is difficult to choose a second language as I will not be able to use any one language accross the world. I have settled for German because I would like to live and work in Scandanavia or Eastern Europe - but if I was to learn Slovak or Norwegian I would only be able to speak it in that country. Yes many speak English and speak it well but I don't want to appear arrogant by not having any other language aside from English. Whenever I visit a country I make a point of carrying a phrase book and I learn as much as I can especially please and thank you and other key phrases, yet there is a limit to what I can do. I have many friends who do much more, and several who can speak many languages.
You are right in that there are many native English speakers who do presume that all foreigners should speak English. Yet there are many others who don't deserve to be tarred with the same brush, and, finally, English is for the moment anyway, the language of business and internationally used by many countries to communicate with each other.

Because around 84% of the world speak english. Foreigners have to realisticly learn the language if they are all career minded. It is by far the most common language of the world. I believe that every country teaches english as a primary language. Basicly for that reason.

I am Japanese, and I speak 'English' when I'm not in Japan, simply because I have a better chance of being understood if I speak in English rather than in Japanese. But I do give a toss about my own language.
If you go to some other country, you'll see 'foreigners' speaking some other language that is not English, simply because they can be understood more easily in that language than in their own languages. But everyone cares for their mother tongues.
It's just because otherwise we wouldn't be understood, so we do that.

Some language was bound to become an international language of business and commerce. Could've been German, French, Japanese or Chinese.

The flexibility and adaptibility of English makes it useful for an international language. It can absorb words from every culture it connects, and is currently adding more words each year than any other ( another sign of a healthy language.)

If we weren't fortunate to be users of the accepted international language, then we would be more interested in learning foreign tongues.

hoot, hoot, hoot, that's three for you ,i live in Florida, i speak English which is the language of the country in which i live. And i can tell you that a substantial part of this state does not speak the language of the country in which they live ,they speak Hispanic ,which is not the language of this country.Should i wish to live in Spain i would learn Spanish. I would not be so arrogant to think everyone could learn my language in a foreign land.

Due to so many powerful countries using it as first language, English some how became the most common language for non-English speakers to learn as their second language. Due to this, English speakers thought it wouldn't be necessary for them to learn another language, after all if the foreigners speak it all ready.....
It's a pity because it is a great thing to be able to speak another language or languages. It brings many opportunities and I think we should get our act together and start learning languages properly.

That is a generalitiy. If I know someone else's langauge and I have to speak with them, I would try to use their langauge. This is the reason why I'm so interested in languages. I don't think it's right that people have to neglect their own language and culture just because English has a greater influence. If they're Korean natives, I will try Korean, if they're Spanish or Hispanic immigrants, I would try Spanish, if they're deaf, I'll try ASL.

One its needed for them to communicate with the majority of the world meaning that top langues spoken world wide i believe are

French, English and Spanish. Therefore, it would make more sense. Because "Americans dont give a god dam hoot" is because we are ignorant and are afraid of change. Look at all the people that are P offed that Spanish is number one language in lots of cities today in the US yet we dont want that to change.

Althought i do believe that no where in our country states English the official language so all you up tight crackers deal with the change and if you dont like it go back to England where it all started
