If both kidneys were to fail completely, you would die within a few days. You can however survive for quite a long time by undergoing regular dialysis. Dialysis is a process where your blood is pumped out of your body and cleaned of its toxins and waste products, then pumped back into the body. Its a very costly and time consuming treatment. However, a portable dialysis machine was just recently developed which should grant those needing dialysis much greater freedom in their lives while they are waiting for a transplant.

No, you can not live without both kidneys. If you were to have both kidneys removed you might sustain life for a few very short days but those days would be spent on life support and hooked up to dialysis. It is only possible to live with one kidney if the need arises but it is much better to live with both if possible.

No, you absolutely cannot live without a kidney. Why do you think the list for kidney replacement is so long? It takes sometimes years for someone to get a kidney transplant, and many die before getting this kidney.

you guys are nuts......my husband has had both kidneys, urinary track and bladder removed. That was a year ago and he is doing fine. Granted he goes to dialysis three times a week but he just takes a four hour nap.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
