I have a company that owes me approx. $4000.00. What is the best thing for me to do but the least cost effective but the most painful for the company? Such as a lawyer, Small claims court, a mechanic lien, etc.

If you really want the money, then you need to do the easiest thing for them to give it to you.
The more troublesome and painful you make it for them, the more reluctant they are going to be to give it to you.
Their attitude will be that if you really want the money we're going to make you exhaust every avenue to get it which would include court costs, time, etc.
Why pay an attorney a chunk of that money???
Just send them a letter reminding them of the proof you have that they owe it to you and remind them on what terms you'll accept and leave it at that.
Touch base with them every few weeks.
It should only take 30-60 days to pay you.
If you don't get it by then, then start mentioning that you will turn the bill over for collection.
If you jerk the company around too much, they could (if they are smart) make sure you NEVER get the money, despite them owing it to you.
Why risk it? If you want the money, just give them the easiest way to get it to you.
Business history is littered with good examples of people just like you who tried to send a company like that a message and then they never got their money.
You don't want to be like that.

Repost the question and give us enough detail to help you. Is it a big chain? A mom and pop shop? What industry is it? Why do you believe they owe you? etc. etc.

Short answer on this one. Call them or arrange a visit with the person in charge. Explain your side. If they do not do what you ask. Tell them that you will call The Better Business Bureau. Then if they still put it to you. Call the BBB.

Depends on the circumstances! Small claims court is the cheapest, but there are monetary limits, and there's no guarantee you'll get paid. Lawyers are the most expensive, and there's still no guarantee you'll get paid.

Calling in your Uncle Louie and two of his buddies for a midnight visit might be effective . . . but not particularly legal.
