Let your guest take a benadryl about 30 minutes before entering your home. If you have dusted and vacuumed before their arrival and the cat is outside his reaction should be minimal. Don't worry about it, although it is unfortunate your guest is allergic your cat is part of your family and cannot be punished for someone being allergic to him.
PS- make sure your guest takes his/her benadryl every 5-6 hours so not to let up on its properties.
Have a good visit!

addendum: other non drowsy antihistamines may work but they could be sketchy benadryl is a good standby, you could ask them to bring a purifer for their sleeping area, but otherwise you have done all you can and it should not be a problem. Remember if you brush your cats before they come do it outside or vacuum the site where you chose to do so thoroughly.

Well, first of all, they are coming to your home, invading your privacy, turning your normal routine upside down. They know you have cats. If they don't like the fact that you have cats, then they can stay at a hotel or just stay home. I never apologize for my pets. People know I have them and know part of coming to my house is cats and a dog and the hair and dander that goes with it. Yes Benadryl will help, but maybe Claritin-D or Alavert would work better. They are non-drowsy and used to be prescription only medications until they were made over the counter. It sounds like you went above and beyond to get their room as hair and dander free as possible. Get some Febreeze made for allergens and spray on the carpet (if you have carpet in the room), drapes, bedding, anything cloth or material and that will also help. If he gripes, that's his problem. I suspect he is just a cat hater and uses his allergies as an excuse. Enjoy your friend and ignore the husband if he's being a poop!

There are many forms of Benedryl, including non-drowsey. There are many other over the counter meds too. For most people, that will be enough unless the cat gets right in his face. And funny thing, many cats know if someone doesn't like cats, and they will sometimes still get close to them.

But my cats shy away from strangers anyway. You could try to keep the cats in your bedroom & bath as much as possible.

Wash your hands after handling your cats before you touch your friends or anything they may eat from etc...

If your friend is a good friend, he will deal with it.

We had our carpets cleaned last month by a guy who was allergic and he didn't take anything but was OK for the first hour. After that it was good he finished up quickly. He was coughing instead of sneezing. Poor guy!

anybody with that kind of allergy should know what to do. Sounds like you've done what you can. Just be hospitable. Have you told them the cats come inside, and if they do, can you put the cats in a room for a day ? That's not a long time. AND, if they know the risks, then they can choose to stay or not. Evidently, cat's haven't killed him yet !

I know it is a bit expensive, but when I go see my step-daughter I take an Alavert. It is non drowsy & lasts 24 hours he could take it in the morning well before he comes over & he will be fine all day & into the next. It is in a disolvable tablet that has a mint flavor and doesn't even need water to take it with.

My step daughter has to long hair cats and it gives my allergies fits something fierce, but as long as I tkae that I am fine.

Well unless she vacuums the entire house as well as getting shot of the cat for the day, the chances are her son is going to be REALLY uncomfortable - even if the allergy isn't life threatening. So yes, her son will probably put up with it for the sake of his mum - but probably kinder just not to invite him over than make him sit and suffer all day. I am ok with cats - it is dogs that I have a problem with - and even if the house has been vacuumed thoroughly I come out in a rash within minutes of arriving in a "dog zone". Not life threatening but damned uncomfortable - and when someone assures me they do not kjeep dogs only to have me then tell them "obviously you DO keep dogs, did you just kick it out for the day" ? Why do people assume that other people's allergies are "not really that bad". Perhaps they are lucky NOT to be overly reactive. others are NOT so lucky. As someone else said, your friend might want to choose between having a cat OR making her sons life unpleasant on Christmas day OR simply not inviting him in the first place. Depending on the cause of his allergy, a SINGLE cat hair could trigger him. ONE. Hopefully he is not that sensitive, but if he is, then asking him around to the house is actually a bit mean. Mark

My sister's boyfriend is also allergic to cats and I have a very white fluffy one. I always vaccum, etc. like you did and spray something like Oust or Febreeze in the air, but other than that, you're right. There really is nothing else you can do. He is taking that risk by coming to visit you and it isn't your fault. Hopefully since it's just for a day it won't be that bad. Good luck!

My son's best friend was allergic to cats. Before he would stay over I would clean and vacuum and re-vacuum. I put the bedding in the dryer to remove any missed cat shrapnel. We also left a window slightly open so there was fresh air moving through. This was enough so he could spend the nights again. Make sure you vacuum your couch, chairs etc too before they arrive. Good Luck

Try children's benadryl, it works for my pop-in-law. Or Claritin allergy, if he can take it. Personally, I'd put the husband outside and keep the cats in! It's YOUR house, and your cats' house. If they, the guests, can't deal with it for one night, perhaps they really need to make other plans!

Don't stress about it. It's not your cats fault. Make sure his room is well ventilated. Do not allow the cats into the room where he'll be sleeping obviously. Not much else you can do, it's up to him to manage his own allergy. It's only for one night, so it won't kill him.
