Due to the recent popularity of high school students wanting to be accepted into prestiegious universities, I am wanting to know what type of individual takes on the added responsibility of taking Advanced Placement classes in their high school. Are they born with dedication and self motivation, so much so that at their young age , they are willing to give up sleep and a social life to partake in clups, sports, and lots of extra homework? I have great admiratin for this type of person and would like to know more about what motivates them and keeps them motivated. Only serious replies please. You may be brief, as I understand the limits on your time, or you can give me as much information as you like. thank you so much sof-21

One of my children is one of those kids that thrives on excelling. She has never brought home less than an A ever. She also participates in dance (4 classes a week) plays the viola in the Orchestra, and has been a member of Girl Scouts for 9 years. She has also played softball and basketball. She is an avid reader and is in bed nightly between 9-9:30 up at 6am M-F. If she could sleep until 10 or 11am she would be overjoyed. She is her own worst critic and demands excellence from herself. She has a group of friends at school that are all equally amazing...and none of them ever get into trouble. I have no idea where she gets "it" from....and I worry sometimes about the amount of pressure she puts on herself. I guess only time will tell. But to be honest I do watch her closely for signs of stress or "over doing" and I do try to make sure there are at least two days a week that are "free" from activities so she (and the rest of us mear mortals) can relax.

I took three AP classes in my senior year in high school, along with non-AP but still academically enriched Physics and Physiology courses. I got about 6 hours of sleep per night -- 9:00 p.m. through 3:00 a.m. (I did homework from 3:00 a.m. to about 6:15 a.m., in addition to what I'd done the previous evening). No girlfriend, no social life to speak of, and I didn't even watch Laverne & Shirley every week. I don't consider 17 a young age... but I'd adapted to this kind of schedule at age 14. My 9th grade World History teacher was a homework-assigning fiend.
