Agape is the highest form of love. It is love which is not based on conditions. It is love which was expressed in the death of Jesus Christ. God gave to the world that which was most precious above all things.....His Son, that we would understand the depths of His love. In addition, agape love will do what ever is neccessary to preserve or keep your life from hell. If God has to let you take a beating in life, to turn you from death and destruction, He will do it in out of love.

One way I've heard it described is "principled love." Greek, especially the koine greek used to write much of the last part of the Bible, broke love down into four different types:
Agape-love governed by principle, often love that is known by the actions it prompts. It is possible to show this kind of love to someone you don't even know, for example, by sending someone money or supplies through a relief program. Christ dying for all humans is probably the best example of agape love. None of us alive today were alive when he died (obviously), yet his sacrifice benefits us all.
philia-brotherly love, also known as tenderness in a family sense.
eros-love between the sexes
storge-natural affection.

Agape is Greek for "Godly love" or "Holy love." Love that is spiritual, not physical, in its nature. Unselfish, loyal, and benevolent concern for the good of another, as: the fatherly concern of God for humankind; the brotherly concern for others. This is different than the Greek "Eros", or erotic love, or the "phileo", brotherly love.
