I agree that is ludicrous...did the itty bitty little finger hurt their itty bitty feelings....awwww. I don't think that it is a smart or nice thing to do, just not worthy of prosecution. In my opinion, it gives them too much power/ego...and power corrupts.
I get nervous around cops, and I am a law abiding citizen...seriously I shouldn't feel like that, but laws like that make me paranoid.

Chances are the flip off is not the only offense but it got them noticed.
The reverse is a better question. Why would any body be surprised if a cop got upset if they flipped them off? If you weren't trying to piss the cop off and get a response, then why'd you do it?
When I was on patrol and got flipped off, I laughed because, what could the flipper do? Chase me and arrest me? I think not.

When somebody flips me off, I consider it a flag down...a citizen in need of assistance. Whenever I can I assist them by finding a reason to take them to jail. I like to respond by flipping them off as i drive out of the jail. Of course, they can't see it because they are in jail! Now that's what I call public service!

Remember that bully from 8th grade who always took your lunch or jabbed you in the stomach for no reason?
He's a cop, and he never did like losing face with anybody.
I try to avoid interacting with cops as much as possible. It can only lead to bad things.

Maybe because you're not allowed to do that to policeman? That provokes them and could give them probable cause.
