how can i tell whether this tiny, little red thing next to my lip and possibly slightly on it is a small zit or a small scar, there has been wax on it before.

You can watch and wait and see what it does.

If it is a zit it might grow bigger and develop either a black head or a white head and then it will settle down of its own accord.

If it is a scar it will shrink and go away.

If it is a cold sore it will get bigger and blistery and you should get a cold sore cream.

Use warm salt water compress, a washcloth and some bacitracin or any antibiotic ointment on it for a few days. If it goes away it is a zit. If not it's a scar. Have someone else look at it or use a magnifying mirror.

I used to get pimples on the edge of my upper lips once in a while when I was a teen. They can be very painful if you try to pop them so leave them alone and they will go away on their own.

If it hasn't cleared in 10 days, see a dermotologist.
