This is wonderful. Modern superstition comes from action movies.
As far as I know, the Ark of the Covenant hasn't made a public appearance since the last time Solomon's Temple was destroyed, around 50 or 100 years after Jesus. So there's been plenty of time to re-write the legends.

Well first you have to find it. There were lots of people in the Bible that touched it and did not die. One man died (Uzzah) because they handled it wrong. Don't believe the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" it was just a movie and their bodies rotting off their flesh was out of Revelations and had nothing to do with the Ark. Back in the book of Ezekiel the Spirit of God left the Ark and I think that if you found it now it is just a gold box, worth a lot of money but no power in it anymore.
BTW the story about the rope on the leg is just a myth.

I believe that is if you look upon the ark of the covenant that you will be destroyed not in the touching of it. It used to be kept in the center of the temple where only the holiest of the Rabbis could go and even then they had ropes tied to them that should they not be worthy, and perish, they could be pulled out.

Legend says that, which is why it was carried around on the poles. It was assume to ber a kind of giant field coil, but that is speculation
