both are fine. "what date is it?" is more proper english. "whats the date?" is more what you would here.
i would normally ask "what day is it?"

Actually as an English Man living in England rather than any other English speaking Country. The answer is YES. If you where to ask for todays date you would say "What date is it, please?" or "Could you tell me what date it is please?" anything else would be classed as a colloquialism or dialect difference within the country.
If you where to say "What's the date?", then you would be most rude and also sound uneducated. It may however be correct if speaking American English as they are actually totally different languages with regard to etiquette. The only common theme is that we can both understand each other, as spellings of words can also be quite different.
As a Native English Man I would say you are quite correct. Keep up the good work!

Yes, it's fine. I would probably most often say, What's the date today? As others have said, please is almost obligatory in most situations, but for example if you were in the middle of talking or doing something with some friends, please would be too formal.
Some people have suggested, What day is it? They are 100% wrong, this is asking a different question: What day is it, is it Friday or Saturday? What's the date today, is it the tenth or the eleventh? You have to watch out for this one, in normal British English day and date sound almost the same!

What you have written is correct, but it much more common for people to say, "What's the date?"

There is nothing grammatically wrong, although it's more correct to say 'what's the date?'

We seem to say "What's the date?" but "What day is it?".
"What date is it?" is grammatically correct but not used in normal speech.
Good luck!
