Wheres a good site to find appartments?

I'm in kansas now but I have lived in Pasadena CA and been in San Diego and in the Bay area. I've had friends tell me they got the best places by word of mouth, walking or driving around in the neighborhood(s) where they wanted to live (i.e. near the school you are interested in). We found our house in florida with cheap rent simply by driving to the general area and then walking around, until we found little houses that had "for rent by owner" type signs - they were not advertised in the paper (because they didn't want to pay for the advertising expense!) - and so their rents were cheaper! I'm sure riding a bike or scooter or rollerblading would work...
Of course... once you found a location, it might be good in this day and age to plug in the address of the place to your state's Registered Sex Offenders website or similar sites, to help you figure out if you are renting an apartment that is "cheap" only because a registered criminal is in the area...
