There are some, but it does make it harder to become a police officer. Those who do have a criminal record, only have a misdemeanor record. Any person convicted of a felony cannot become a police officer, because according to federal law, felons are prohibited from possessing firearms. Without a gun, it's kinda hard to be a cop. There are also certain misdemeanor convictions that would prohibit a person from being a cop, but those are up to the individual agencies to decide.

The only way to know for sure would be to for the person in question to call the departments they are looking at joining and ask about his/her particular record and whether or not it would prohibit them from joining.

A lot of police officers have been accused of all kinds of crimes,
in Countries of the 3rd World it doesn't matter because as their profession is one of the worse paid, only a few people accept
that kind of jobs.Although, just today we saw in CNN a couple of handsome officers hitting a tied unarmed man, and their chiefs said "perhaps" they were acting bad. In USA today what is the importance of the record, if the guy is a criminal in uniform.

Yes, a large number of police officers have misdemeanor convictions. A convicted felon cannot become a police officer, but a convicted felon can become a Sheriff, because they are elected. If a convicted felon is elected as sheriff technically they cannot carry a firearm, but they do. A Sheriff can hire a convicted felon if he so chooses.

no i don't think, the police would hire any other cop with a police record, unless they didn't know cause he or she is hiding it some kind of way. :-)

I'm sure they do. I knew a judge that had a tether on. It was for too many recent DUI's. And with rampant domestic abuse nowadays it's not feasable that all cops are "perfect"
