The word of "sword" can be translated both as ”katana;刀" and as "tsurugi or ken; 剣". It depends on your what kind of sword on being imagined.
The difference between "katana" and "tsurugi" is the shape and the number of blades.
Katana has curved shape and has only one blade. Sometimes, it is called "nihon-to;日本刀". This style of sword is developed in Japan.
Tsurugi (=ken) has straight shape and has two blades on its both edge. It is developed in ancient China.

Katana is the Japanese generic for Sword.
There are specific names for the different sizes of swords: Tachi, Shirasaya, Tanto, etc. And about a zillion names for different blade shapes and treatments, etc.
Nihonto being the collecting or appreciation of swords of Japanese make.
