first of no, Iam not one of those idiots who play a game or watch a movie and say "hey i want to be a navy seal" I honest to goodness want to be a special forces operative but after extensive research I found "excellent shape" to be the only clue to how fit one needs to be and " mental readyiness" (I hope Iam spelling that right) are the only answers I came across, oh wait but there are people willing to "sell me the info". so please any tips or insight about those would be helpfull espically from those who actually are in the armed forces, any tips on fitness, training or any other advice on how to become ready would really help. P.S. oh by the way this is a work in progress I understand I still need to be in much better shape so training for a year or two is already expected.

Navy Seals are the elite. One has to be intelligent, (get good grades in school, read and do well at math.) Have self confidence and high self esteem. Be incredibly physically fit. (That I can't emphasize enough!!!) And you HAVE to work very, very well with a team and of course be willing to die at any given moment. You make sacrifices like you wouldn't beleive. No wife, no kids. Good luck to you - stay smart - don't drink or mess around with drugs. Ever.

It goes without saying that you need to be physically fit and that means the ability to swim 2 miles with fins in open water in less than 80 minutes. Learn the sidestroke, that is the only stroke used in BUD/S or in the Teams. Try to be good at running, swimming and PT but be really good at 2 and you will have a better shot.

As for the mental toughness aspect, you either have this because you were born with it or your parents raised you that way or you do not. You are either a person that demands excellence and despises failure or you are not. You either possess integrity and are reliable or you do not. These are characteristics that you will know that you have and if you do not have them you will probably know that as well. If you are unsure, ask an enemy or someone who doesn't like you, they probably won't bullshit you.

Less than 30% of a given BUD/S class graduates so you should be real about your chances. I did not expect to do anything but excell when I was in training, and I made it. Ask yourself this question: Do I want to be a Navy SEAL or be known as a Navy SEAL? Many people just want this resume bullet and not the work, pain, and sacrifice that goes with it. Be real about that question. Everybody wants to be known as a SEAL. If you don't make it, it isn't the end of the world and you are not a loser-you may be a quitter but not necessarily a loser.

We need aggressive young guys in the Teams who are smart, tough, and trustworthy. If you are that kind of person, I hope that you do make it.

Look, don't go buying something from some corny site. Go talk to your local navy recruiter. They are able to give you the physical requirements that you need to pass in order to try out to be a SEAL. In boot camp there is a physical test that you need to pass in order to go to the training school. You have to swim a certain distance, do a certain number of push ups, a number of situps, and some number of pull ups. All with a limited time to recover.

Before you sign the dotted line if you truly decide to go in, make sure that it is in your contract that you have a chance to go to SEAL school. Also, be aware, if you fail the first time you go and it is not in your contract as to what kind of school you are going to other than SEAL, you will belong to the Navy and will be going where ever they really need you the most (become an electricians mate or something technical, there are a few different jobs that the SEALs need that will teach you job skills that you need after you get out). Be aware that there is a lot more to consider than just going to try and be a SEAL.

One more thing, more people are not able to become a SEAL because after a certain amount of strain, the body just shuts down. It does not matter the amount of will or training, it is something that the body either can or can't do.

Many want to be a SEAL but few make it. Training is the key though, both mentally and physically and getting your workout started before you try for the Navy SEALs is very important.

To become a Navy SEAL, and to encourage those who are thinking about entering to take the SEALs challenge.

Whether you are thinking about joining the Navy or are already active duty or reserve, you have to meet the SEAL training general requirements before you can become a SEALs candidate. By the time you've read this hopefully you will have started your own SEAL training; both mentally and physically. Remember, your training should be a continuous process.

The ASVAB score is very important. Not only are you taking the ASVAB test for the SEALs, you must meet or exceed the ASVAB score for the SEAL source rate of your choosing! Just make sure you are constantly training. This will help you out when you are exposed to the physical demands of SEAL training.

If you've decided to become a SEAL and haven't joined the Navy yet talk to your recruiter and tell him or her that you would like to be a SEAL. They will go over the requirements and training with you and give you the SEAL Challenge Contract if you qualify.

If you are already in the Navy please see your Career Counselor for further details. Whatever you remember this, you should constantly train both mentally and physically before you take the physical screening test!

After you have completed your source rate "A" school you are off to Basic Underwater Demolition School/SEAL (BUD/S) where the challenge of your life will begin. Just remember to start your SEAL workout now. Train for the ASVAB as well as the physical test. That will give you the edge before you enter the SEAL screening test.

I'm sure you can google the stories. What I know is that very few who take the entrance exam get thru. Then, of those who get into SEAL school, about 70% are washed out. You need to be a physical specimen (how do you feel about swimming for 18 hours? or running 20 miles? and on no sleep for 2-3 days?). You also need to be smart, cunning... In other words, Seals are made by God, and only polished up in SEAL training. I wish you luck. Thanks for wanting to serve your country!

Physical shape is just the start, they want you smart also so finish school if you have not already. Go to college, smarter is better. Join the Navy and work hard. If you are not committed to being a SEAL you will not make it. What the guy said about them screwing with your head, that is all true. It is hell to become a SEAL, good luck.

If your young, rethink your options and open a lot more options..

But if your like in elementary or middle school.. Do extreamly well in school and when you get to the 2nd last year of highschool, think again if you want to be a SEAL.. If you dont, since you did soo good in school you can be anything you want..

If you still want to be a SEAL... Its only the 2nd last year of highschool, so now you have 2 years to workout.. But still study hard, do your homework, and be smart and dont do drugs and such.. And you'll not only be a very good SEAL, but you'll be a very productive citizen...

But you must have a lot of discipline.. Leadership and all such.. Practice those for rest of your life, not only for the SEAL... But for your own values.. They're very good values you should always live by...

I CAN TELL YOU FOR A FACT THAT NAVY SEALS ARE THE BEST THERE IS , AND I WAS FORCED RE-CON FOR 9yrs OF MY TEN IN THE MARINE CORP. SO TAKE MY WORDS IN GOOD STANDING . 1st. LEARN TO LAP SWIM WITH YOUR RIGHT ARM AND THEN WITH LEFT ARM ACROSS AN OLYMPIC POOL 10 TIMES ON EACH ARM , 2ND. LEARN TO HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR AT LEAST 2min. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POOL ,NOT THE TOP , NOT THE MIDDLE . THE FURTHER TO THE BOTTOM YOU GO THE MORE PRESSURE IS PUT ON YOUR LUNGS , 3rd. LEARN TO RUN FAST ( BUT ) YOU HAVE TO RUN IN THE SAND AT THE BEACH AT-LEAST A FOUR MILE RUN THIS WILL BUILD UP YOUR STAMINA AND YOUR LEG MUSCLES FOR ALL THE TRAINING YOU WILL BE PUT TH RU WHEN YOU GET USED TO RUINING ON THE BEACH CORRECTLY THEN START USING 2 1/2 lb. WEIGHTS ON EACH FOOT TO GIVE YOU THAT LITTLE EXTRA MOTIVATION , AND MAN YOUR LEGS ARE GOING TO BE SORE MAN , I MEAN SORE DUDE. 4Th. TAKE UP WEIGHT TRAINING LIGHT WEIGHTS , YOU DON'T WANT TO GET BULKY YOU WANT DEFINITION ONLY AND SOME POWER THE REST THEY WILL TECH YOU , THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU NEED TO LEARN IS TO KEEP CALM IN ANY BAD SITUATION , NO MATTER WHAT GUYS SCREAM AT YOU . From a Veterans point of view.. STUDY IN SCHOOL...Get good grades... go to college, because you have to be a pretty smart and quick on your feet to pass the tests... and live your life as a kid... keep active.. play sports... but most importantly get your mind full of information now... it can help you in a situation when you ARE a Navy Seal... or whatever you want to be in life... Good luck lil man...

veteran's point of view -

leadership skills are Essential - even if you just want ot be a regular SEAL not an officer, you'll have to prove leadership skills and you can start working on that at your age... so, play team sports (you need to be able to work very very very well with others) and try to become team captain in as many sports as possible... also, it probably wouldn't hurt to join the eagle scouts or something...

also, you need to score well on the ASVAB, so get good grades and take real subjects like math and science, not crap like arts and crafts...

I'm telling you this b/c you can start working on all of this at your age
