not saying your preacher is not good or insightful, that would be a poor interpretation of my question.

to say you should not believe the preacher when he teaches from the bible is a bit presumptuous, don't you think? Most preachers I know actually have those in the congregation open their bibles and read along. It is not unreasonable to believe that the preacher has the best of intentions and knows that he is under the direction of God in expositing the truth. If you are that untrusting of your preacher , I would suggest that you are probably not actually an attender of church services otherwise you would know that most congregations have a deep and loving relationship with their pastor and it is as a group that the assembly learns the truths from Gods word. Its not like a classroom at colleges where the professer tries to alter your belief, most are already believers and study the word at home as well...if they are what they profess to be at least.

I never read the bible, because I honestly look at this book as one which has several 'stories' which relate to human interaction. Many Christians somehow believe that this book is the 'ultimate guide to get to heaven' - ah-huh, but are they aware this book was written by men, not God himself?

We all have the right to believe and in our own way of course. I talk to my God as if he were right beside me listening. I don't feel a need to be in a church or facility listening to someone else tell me what I am supposed to be believing. I honestly believe this is 'dictation' in its most general form.

Rather than being 'cynical' about the whole ordeal, I would just say, to those who read the 'good book', use your judgment wisely. Try to stay in a positive mind, and do attempt to apply these parables (stories) to your own life in a smart and effective way.

Cheers,

bga

I'm teaching a Sunday School class, so this keeps me in the Scriptures pretty regularly. I also memorize one every week, and give them one to work on too, this keeps them in the Scriptures too!
My hubby is a Preacher, and living with a good one is like having the Bible around all the time. Gentle, loving, moral and kind, yeah!

A good way to study your Bible is to have a good study Bible, and a Strongs Concordance if you are doing a word study, there are all kinds of good sources for Bible Studies, and you can order them on line or most Christian book stores will carry books on Bible Studies. I use a Scofield study Bible check out the cross references and the foot notes..I sometimes do a topical study or study one book at a time...ask for Gods wisdom before you study That He will open your heart and your mind to His Word and give you understanding.

Front to back or back to front by topic as the topics are presented in real life. Every week or so I set a DVD to play all night -- do beginning to end in my sleep. Will also do reading based on sermons of W. Nee, China; W. Branham and C. Finney, USA, and some others.

Will sometimes do topical study suggested by strange doctrines: however these "strange" ideas are coming up so fast that I have abandoned this type of study.

Don't leave reading to anybody else; don't assume that they have read it; and don't assume that they understand it.

I took the preacher out of the equation a long time ago! It's God, His word, and me...that works just fine. I read the bible just as you described and I do my best to understand and put what I know in to action.

Before I start, I say a prayer asking the Lord to give me wisdom and understanding of what I'm about to read, then I get my concordance to get understanding on some of the words in the bible, paper and pen to jot down important verses that I can apply to my life.

I don't go to church and I take the Bible with a grain of salt. I think that the Bible was written by man and is mankind's attempt to explain our existence. Some of it may have a basis in fact. Hope you are having a great day!

read one paragraph over and over till you get its meaning..i dont trust preachers to begin with and each person reading the same line will get something different from it.God speaks to each of us through his word, and besides...the real church is inside of us.no need for preachers.they are only human and prone to the same sins as the rest of us.i dont want someone whos not perfect to tell me how to live my life..only God has the right to do that.

Best procedure:
Read Bible everyday ....not a whole lot.
Ponder on what was read. Dare I say "meditate" on it.
Read some more. Ponder on it.
When reaching any conclusions ....apply it.
ACT!
If it turns out well ....you have found a good thing.
