I have a Chow Chow, it best you get a Chow when it a baby and train it to be around children, so they can be protective for your family. But if you really want a family dog that loves kids, get a Golden Retriver.

well, it really depends on how you raise the dog... especially if you make the dog know that you are the boss, this includes going near the dog when hes eating, putting your hand in the bowl etc... even turn your dog over, look him in the eyes and growl at him in the lowest voice you can, until he looks away. Also, dont be afraid to disipline your dog, its the only way to show him you are boss....because if you dont then the dog could get very aggressive... chows are known to be agressive, but if you really want one, you should raise it right and maybe keep it away from yoru children until you are sure he..she is harmless.

i am on my 5th female chow chow.
she was born and spent her first 6 months happily with 5 cats, 2 pekinesses, i scotty, and other assorted exotic small breeds.
the anwsers i have read here bear no similarity to any chow i have ever owned.
she is the most dignified, fastidious, friendly, chow i have owned and i put it down to her loving upbringing. she has never bit anyone, let alone a child.
in my opinion, they are an intelligent, if willful species but with proper training and upbringing, they excell as family pets.

That is the one breed that i would NEVER own!! IF there were NO OTHER breeds on earth....I would become a cat person.
WHY???? Well, they are unpredictable!!! I have worked in many vets hospitals and also worked as a groomer, and the ONE breed I NEVER wanted to deal with was a CHOW!!!!!!!!
Most were fear biters...the worst kind you can get. Can't stand Chows.

Absolutely NOT. They have a bad pressure bite and could bite a child in a life threatening way for something as simple as the child walking in the yard near where they have buried a bone. A chow literally can see a child as a threat and hurt or KILL a child in jealousy as well.

i use to have a chow, and i loved him dearly but he just wasnt a kid type dog.if a kid ever ran from him he would maul them very bad.i ended up going to court and had to pay for the hospital bill on a 8 year old i warned to stay out of the yard, but he didnt listen and was tore up. but no real life threatning injuries, but it was bad enough we had to put him down. {the dog}i would reconsider another breed.

Chows can be aggresive. More so than other dogs.
Be careful with any dogs around children.

NO! This is one of the few breeds most vets do NOT recommend owning. They are one-person dogs, often biting other family members, & do not tolerate children. They bite without giving normal canine warning signs (such as growling, standing up hair on backs & showing teeth). They can never be trusted around friends & family.
If it is the appearance of them you like, check out these other similar looking breeds that are good with kids you might want to consider: Keeshound http://www.akc.org/breeds/keeshond/index.cfm & Norwegian Elkhound http://www.akc.org/breeds/norwegian_elkhound/index.cfm

No, and whatever breed you get needs to be trained and be careful with dogs and small children - generally they do not mix well!
