The Thief AND Jesus both Died 3 Nights And 3 Days Plus Sunday Night time (early morning) Prior To Jesus Appearing Unto Mary.
So Did The Thief Go To Heaven That Day? No, And Neither Did Jesus! As A Matter Of Fact, Human Beings ,"As A Rule", do not go to Heaven when they die! As For Enoch And Elijah.... They were translated, but being translated does not mean they went to heaven. No human being other than Jesus has ever ascended into the Kingdom of Heaven. (Look at the scripture:John 3:13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.) If another human being were to have ascended into the Kingdom of Heaven PRIOR to Jesus, then Jesus would not have become the "First Born" or "The First of The First Fruits" or "The First Begotten Son of God." To be the "First Born Son of God". Jesus is presently the only Human Being to be Born Again (resurrected to immortality), and he is, also, the only Human Being to enter God's Kingdom in Heaven;
The rest of The Children of God have yet to be resurrected (truly Born Again).
"Today" Is A mistranslation of "Semeron", and should have been translated as "Toward This Day", "When This Day Has Approached" or even "At The Beginning Of This Day".

The soul of the thief was with Jesus' soul(s) while Jesus body was in the tomb.
A lot of stuff was going on in the spirit realm over that three day period.

Because when they both died they went to a place called "Paradise" and Jesus remained there for three days before His ressurection. That was the place where all believers went before Jesus died on the cross. When Jesus left there He went to heaven and He took with Him all the people in Paradise to Heaven. Today when any believer in Christ dies they go directly to Heaven to be with Christ.

Because they went to paradise, and there Jesus taught them.
Jesus left and decended into the lowest Hell to take the keys of death, hell and the grave from satan.
