Why? I think he's just saying to himself, "There they go again, it's about to get quiet around here so I might as well get ready to sleep it out." My dog scratches at the carpet immediately before laying down in that spot to have a nap.
How can you stop it? I don't know. If you have a small dog maybe you can get a doggie bed and teach him to sleep in it and show him that is where he's to go now that you're leaving for work. You know, "Time to go night-night, we'll be back." He's choosing that spot in front of the couch and TV because that is probably where he usually lays to be near you and your wife while you're watching TV. Maybe that's where you should put the doggie bed before you leave for work.
For my dog, a doggie-bed is out of the question because I have a big dog (retriever), so the only thing I can do is make sure her claws are trimmed all the time.
I hope I have been of some help.

It depends what you mean by scratching. Do you mean he's tearing it up and chewing it? If so, he's lonely. Dogs are not meant to be alone all day. You have to make sure he has lots of chew toys and make sure he is a part of things the minute you get back home.

he is probably trying to dig a whole to get out of the house and catch up with you guys. He doesn't want to be left behind and alone. You should play with him a lot more and consider doggy daycare.
