I read the book "How We Die" written by a doctor. It explored all types of death - even the murder of a young child in front of the parents. The parents were comforted by the peace-full look on the child's face. Bazaar, but the author went on to explore why this would happen - must be a something the brain produces to over ride panic.

It depends on how you die.
Some ways (consider infarcted bowel with peritonitis) are excrutiating.
High power bullet to the head is painless.
