If you're working for a finance position or for a financial institution, they usually check ur credit. It's kind of unfair, but they do it so that it wouldn't be a contradictory issue. Your dealing with finances but yet your finances are bad. That's kinda how I see it.

Some places look at credit because bad credit can signal a bigger chance for fraud or theft... but if they are impressed with your resume and like you otherwise, it's usually not a deal breaker.

Bad credit throws darkness in biggger quantums on your personal integrity.

Bad credit legally can't keep you from getting a job. They may look at it as a red mark, but that alone can't determine you getting a job or not.
They will look at everything - your history, your criminal record etc.
