I have read most of the answers given in here for your question. I do agree with all of them especially about stealing of personal information to use it as a marketing or even scam to rip you off..
It all depends upon who is asking this information. If a migration agent has asked for it saying its required by embassy, then its advisable to be vary and contact embassy directly to confirm if its one of the mandatory requirements. As answered by others, government of any country you are migrating as a student wants to know that you are financially sound to support yourself and not gonna be a burden to the country. I am in Australia and even here the same rules apply.
SO MAKE SURE WHO IS ASKING FOR IT AND CONFIRM WITH THE OFFICIAL AUTHORITY IF IN DOUBT....

Stop! STOP!!!!

don't show your bank statement to anyone, other than your family!

They can steal your numbers, and steal your identity and give it to someone overseas.

If anyone does this, it is then international and there is nothing you can do...other than tell the FBI, and they won't care about your money! They're a little busy.
If you have picture ID, drivers license or get one at the drivers license center (...just the ID part), and passport, that is enough!
