We all know that you need to reach a level of maturity before you decides things for yourself, but we don't all reach that level of maturity.

You don't need a certain level of maturity to decide to come to God, you need to decide to trust Him as a child trusts their Daddy...children always think...my daddy's the biggest, the strongest, the best, ....no hesitation....just pure trust....that's why God says to "suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven"....maturity in the Lord comes AFTER the initial step of faith, but you first must come trusting Him.........it's got everything to do with freewill!

Dear Ouroboros,

Free will is something God has given to each of us the moment we are born. While God does not give us each the same life experience or circumstance He does promise that He never gives us more than we can handle.

Personal maturity is based on individual experiences and decisions. The fact that we have free will--- allows us to make choices that will either mature us or not. The fact that different people are at different levels of maturity speaks volumes about the permissiveness of God's will.

It is also true that people make poor decisions that restrict their free will -- ie: the criminal who ends up in jail- restricts his own freedoms.

Hope that helps. Feel free to email with specific questions or thoughts, comments, etc.

Kindly,

Nickster

Very good question. I think that lack of maturity comes from parents not meeting all their obligations to their children, to raise them properly (yes the parents are often too immature to do so, but in that case, their parents shirked the responsibility). But then, I know some VERY immature people who display an amazing amount of free will. I think it really does ultimately boil down to this: you have the free will to decide to give up that free will & basically become a sheep.

You see freewill as an act based on conditions. Then you stipulate the need for certain condition before one can act.
Since conditions are random in time; there is no logical answer to your question and no firm basis for the assumption of freewill.

We don't all reach it because some of us choose not to expand our minds and seek new things. Some of us feel much safer living in a world where nothing changes and everything is all set. Yet some of us choose to think outside of the box, and that is the first step to the advanced free will you speak of.

We all have free will. We all have the free will to stay inside the box, as well as to explore outside of the box.

I am an explorer. It's more dangerous, but it's one hell of a journey.

Blessed be.

That's not fair for you people to say everyone has freewill. A child does not have the same freewill as a grown-up and just because you are physically older, doesn't mean you've matured intellectually.

God has nothing to do with freewill. That is why its 'freewill'. Otherwise, our freewill, or perceived lack thereof, is solely in our own hands. When we stop looking outside of ourselves for fault, then we become richer and more free than before.

This is true Some people do have alot more maturity than others and do make mistakes that's why there are are consequences to bad judgment. Hopefully people will learn from their mistakes and grow up..

"Free will", as commonly understood, is a myth. Try to find ANYTHING in the Bible about man's free will. On the contrary, the Bible teaches that God is sovereign and man is responsible for his actions (that is not the same as saying that man has "free will" over his actions).
God is sovereign over every choice made by man. This does not, however, make man a "robot" because man does what he wants to do (robots do not have desires).
Philippians 2:13 sums it up best, "for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." You both "will" (that is want or desire) and "work" (that is do what you do) according to God's good pleasure.
