If you are driving, you need a drivers license and orginal birth certificate, so you can get back into the USA (I think this is a trick question because the date you gave "happens" to be the date that by air/sea you need a passport)

It has always been enough to have just license or even birth certificate, but I have received an email from Expedia.com which states that this law is changing. Passports will be required for all border crossings, even where they were not previously needed (i.e., Canada, the Bahamas). The only thing is I can't remember the exact date this goes into effect, but it is soon. If you plan to travel soon then I think it would be a good idea to have a passport. You can search for the information under "passport requirements".

Passports make it simplier but you can use a driver's license and birth certificate. When I traveled to Canada I got a passport because I changed my name and I did not want to run into difficulty with my birth certificate being a different name except for my first name. I wanted "no questions asked" and that is what I got with my passport. You still have time to get a passport before January if you act quick and they are good for alot of years.

It's been awhile, but the last I went to Canada from Detroit, I didn't need a passport, a drivers license was enough.

Well if you enter through Michigan you need a passport regardless or they won't let you through the border. However by January 1st, 2008 all USA citizens will be required to have a passport to enter Canada, Mexico or USA as well as leave those three countries.

I agree. I travel back and forth to the US often from Canada. I lost my passport a year ago and have been using my driver's license and birth certificate ever since. No problems to report.
