I recommend that you go with a widescreen TV because of movies and HDTV. Movies these days are being coded in widescreen because a lot of people want to see the movie in its original format. Until wide TVs came out, you had to deal with the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.
HDTV is the new format of broadcast television that will be taking over. The picture quality difference is 6 times clearer and formatted in widescreen. Currently, every major broadcast company broadcasts in HDTV. In a couple of years, the rest of the stations will be forced to switch over to HD. You'll either want to buy a widescreen or get used to the black bars because tv is about to get wide.
Stretching regular TV to fit the screen is optional. New televisions have multiple ways of filling out the sides of your television. Go to the store and look for a button that says "stretch mode," "wide mode," or something that sounds close. You should be able to pick from three different styles.
The blurry picture has more to do with poor picture quality being broadcast. Old TV's had lines that ran through the picture. If you want an example, spread your fingers and move them accross your TV screen at home. You should be able to spot the "scanning lines" without any problems. New TV's don't have scanning lines. They lines are filled in, but sometimes that makes the picture look blurry. On the other hand, HDTV makes regular TV look like black and white television. Seriously, one football game or favorite movie should sell you on the quality.
My suggestion is to look at a DLP. They are cheaper than plasmas and LCD tvs and have less repair issues. They won't hang on your wall, but they will give you an amazing picture.

I would say a wide screen, because these days movies are made for them, notice the way beginning credits are being chopped off the edge of a regular screen TV. The quality depends on how much you're prepared to pay, better resolution and all that. But if you wait a while they will come down in price like most things and will have ironed out any bugs that come with new inventions.

Some devices will default to stretching but some will padded the picture with black bars and display the ratio correctly. I probably would go with regular ratio since there are so many widescreen ratio and black bars are unavoidable anyway.
Widescreen rises because movie house letterbox style of display which in turn similar in ratio to your typical human field of vision so movie engineers argue that it gives you a paranomic and immersive view of the movies. Although being widescreen devices usually happen to be high definition and that is always better quality.

I have a Phillips 55" widescreen. It's GREAT for movies!!! The newer widescreens (mine included) have different screen settings you can choose, so you don't have to have the "bars" on the sides while watching non-widescreen shows. You can set it to be regular widescreen (which will distort your picture on regular tv) or you can set it to "automatic" or a few other options (including a "regular" setting in which there WILL be black bars on the sides of the tv) in which the distortion is non-existent, or VERY minimal. It's very easy to change, using the remote, so can be changed to fit your needs depending on what you're watching at the time.
I love my widescreen and will never go back to "regular" tv!!!

The resolution makes a big difference. There are 780i, 780p, 1080i and 1080p. If you have regular TV, it can't support 1080.
With the digital cable, wide screen TV makes a big difference.
It is marvelous experience to watch widescreen TV.

It all depends on your preferences. Widescreen is intended to simulate watching something in the cinema. Regular is regular.
But be warned - Widescreen TV's sometimes put 2 black bands on the top of the screen and at the bottom. Those drive me insane.
