how are those two neighborhoods different?

Actually, if you were familiar with Portland you'd know I was refering to Oregon, by the neighborhoods I mentioned!

Well, the NW is vast and very diversified as it includes the west hills and pearl district which are ritzy and very expensive. There are just a few pockets of reasonable older converted apartments that might be had for$650 but the waiting list is long.
The Hawthorn is a much smaller section in the SE and an older neighborhood. It has been getting more upscaled in the recent years and it's a mix of demographics. You can probably find something bigger for about the same price without the wait.
Both areas offer good diversified selections of restaurants, shops, bars and activities on foot.
