Best AND cheapest would be by train, but only if you have time to travel as they are very slow. For your comfort sake, ALWAYS go first class sleeper as you will regret it if you don't.

I have travelled from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and back and found the journey quite pleasant. The links below will give give you more info.

The bus is the cheapest, but for the price difference, I would take the train. The buses are always a bit of a mixed bag. Sometime they're nice, air conditioned and not over full. Other times they can be nightmares!

I took the train from Bangkok to Chan Mai and loved every second. It cost about £6 and I had my own bunk (clean and comfortable). There is also a bar on board and a dining car. You'll enjoy the journey a lot more and will appreciate the views. Good luck :)

Take the train. It's not that expensive and you'll see a lot of nice countryside on the way. Just go to the train station in Chiang Mai and ask them the details. The cost depends on whether you go first, second, or third class, and whether you take an express train or one that stops at a lot of different stations. Bus is all right, but some bus companies are safer than others. I prefer the train.
