I think that is a pretty fair statement.

That's a very deep thought question I like it! Religion is always-ed divided that will never change due to the fact that people are going to believe what ever they choose to.
But Spirituality uniting? it's hard to say. I would say yes. because god made us and everyone has a spirit so it is possible to have spirituality unite. I guess it would have to be everyones choice for this to happen.....does this help?

Excellent question! My answer on this is that all the major religions have a core of truth that has been obscured by mankind and the dogmatic aspect of those religions. Spirituality is the core or essence of religion and spirituality yet transcends religion and goes far beyond what you can learn about yourself and God than what religion can teach you. The best source for you to get an extremely clear explanation to this question is to listen to an audio book by Eckhart Tolle called "The Power of Now" I guarantee if you listen to this book on CD you will gain valuable insights into life and God and our existence. His other book "A new Earth" is also very very good at specifically answering this very question.
Good luck on your search...Namaste and peace!!

Good question...I have been looking more toward uniting rather than dividing. I have been in an organized religion all of my life...you know the one where there's only one way to heaven and if you don't believe in that then off to hell with you. I've been surrounded by people who think they are better than others simply because they believe that their way of thinking is right. I can't stand that. I believe God is in all of us and He is in everything, after all He created it all and that is the foundation of most if not all religions. So, God is good, kind, loving etc...right? So if He is in all of us than we all have the ability to be good, kind, loving etc...if we choose to be. So I do think religion does divide simply because we fail to see the commonness (if that's even a word...but you get what I mean) of our varying religions. I would love to see how we can all come together and appreciate the differences in our beliefs that are really based on similar principles and foundations of a God who created everything and loves us ALL because we are His children. Wow...

Spirituality can be anything as can religion. However, religion can unite and it can divide. Look at all those who call themselves Christians yet can not agree even on the basics.

Not necessarily.
This is a very naive question. Just for example, one can entrust one's spirit to dark forces. This is being spiritual, but it is profoundly divisive.
Does religion divide? Well, yeah: God himself said that one must worship him and create no imaginary gods. So everyone who is creating imaginary gods is an enemy of God. No way around the truth-falsehood division.

Only not knowing the truth is what dives, along with Satan's whispers.
[006:158] Do they then wait for anything other than that the angels should come to them, or that your Lord (Allâh) should come, or that some of the Signs of your Lord should come (i.e. portents of the Hour, e.g., rising of the sun from the west)! The day that some of the Signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good (by performing deeds of righteousness) through his Faith. Say: "Wait you! we (too) are waiting."
[006:159] Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) have no concern with them in the least. Their affair is only with Allâh, Who then will tell them what they used to do.
[006:160] Whoever brings a good deed (Islâmic Monotheism and deeds of obedience to Allâh and His Messenger [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) shall have ten times the like thereof to his credit, and whoever brings an evil deed (polytheism, disbelief, hypocrisy, and deeds of disobedience to Allâh and His Messenger [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) shall have only the recompense of the like thereof, and they will not be wronged.

Jesus said He came to divide. Divide between those going to heaven and those going to hell.
