Our submarine was almost split in two while surfacing off the coast of Portugal during sea trials. One foot to the aft while surfacing under a liberty ship in tow would have spelled the end.

We had a major fire below decks. It took almost 24 hours to get it totally put out.

I was on the Flying Squad. I thought we'd trained for anything, but the fire was next to impossible to fight. Visibility was zero in smoke and we all had to wear an OBA or suffocate.

Another scary time was when I broke up with my girlfriend in Singapore. She came out of the kitchen swinging a knife. I thought she was going to murder me. I guess she thought the relationship was more serious than I did.

the most fear for 90 percent i'd say would e dieing. i am a crewchief on a uh-60l blackhawk here in afghanistan. about 1 month into my tour,we had to do a deliberate operation with special ops near a place called naray.i was on the right side while the other crewchief was on the left. as we were going in to drop them off in the lz a trail of smoke went flying right under me and exploded about 5 feet on the other side,the whole aircraft shaked violently and the pilots broke left to avoid being hit again.as he did that i fired my 240 into the trees where i had seen the rpg come from.at this point our apache escort came in and fired a flachette( think hundreds of steel darts) round and took out 2 enemy. we figured by this point it would be safe to land so we came back around and landed. the sf guys got out and began their raid of a cave complex. about 1 minute into our flight home we got a call that they had been engaged and need help.so back we went and when we got there seen about 20 enemy firing on the group 0f 10 special ops guys.1 sf guy was shot dead and another wounded and was seperated about 300 meters from his squad. we made a decision that if we didnt position ourselves in between them and the enemy,he would surely die.so we came around from the right holding hover directly over the wounded soldier,and as we did,they fired another rpg wich missed again and by this point i was just pissed off so unloaded into the group.after i ran out of ammo,the pilot swung the tail around and the left gunner engaged.we did this until the sf guys could get to the wounded. that by far was the scariest situation i had been in and hope to never be in again. everyone thinks iraq is the only hot spot but they have no idea.i had been there doing 18 months and im over here almost a year at this point and i can easily say ive been in more engagement and seen more enemy than i did while there and i was in baghdad.
