I won't use the mainstream crap brands like Purina as I don't want my cat eating refuse animals (dead lab animals and roadkill) that have been processed then turned into animal chow. Low quality brands like Purina can cause liver and kidney problems in many cats.
I feed my little girl Nature's Recipe Optimum or a similar high value, high quality brand. Iams is good too.

Eagle Pack, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Felidae, CA Natural, Nature's Variety, Nature's Logic. Chicken Soup is a quality food and I feel it has too much grain for cats. These foods range in price from $1.50 per lb to $2.60 per lb.
You should not use just one food for a cat's entire life. It is good for them to have protein sources other than chicken. Some of the mentioned foods have duck, or turkey, or lamb etc. So you can use a bag of the more expensive brand and then a bag of the less expensive brand.
The brands mentioned by other posters use by-product meat (feet, feathers, heads, entrails of chickens) and are 2/3 corn. The better foods have 2/3 quality meat protein and 1/3 filler - brown rice, oats, millet, etc. rather than corn (the least digestible and nutritious grain for a cat).
You should read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article, "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food" from her article library at www.littlebigcat.com. The articles are in alphabetical order so that one is towards the end. It will tell you how to read ingredient labels on pet food bags to pick out the best ones for your cat.

I feed my cat NutroMax. I checked with my vet and she advised that this was a very good food. My cats thrive on it and love it.
Check with your vet, they usually have very good info on what is good and what isn't. Feeding your cat a premium cat food is good as it helps prevent problems in the future, like crystals forming in neutered males urinary tract and bowel problems. Yes, the food is a bit more expensive, but because they have very few fillers, you feed less. Also, better food means less smelly poo and smaller stools; a bonus when you have to scoop the poop.

My 3 indoor baby's and my 2 outdoor tomcats/strays LOVE
a food by Purina. It is in a purple bag and it has little white balls of "Carnation Milk" in it. They gobble it all up.
I buy an 18pd bag for 11.99$ at Walmart. It is a good quality food and I know its healthy because it made a stray kittens coat shiny and soft in about 2 weeks along with a nice healthy weight gain.
Good Luck

Iams is a good brand and I find that my cat poops less on this food.... it is a bit more expensive but I don't use as much litter...so it is just something you have to decide.

I would recommend Purina Adult cat chow. My Grammy uses it for her cats, and it works really well.

I have 3 cats and have been feeding all three of them Iam's multi-cat(in a dark blue bag with yellow labels) Its great for their health and especially if you have a heavy cat and a thin cat, it works for both of them.

PURINA CAT CHOW (complete formula) I've been feeding them that for a while. They love it and it's really good for them. Dont ever give them cheap food, it's not good for their little systems:)
