Also, why do many Americans think that immigrants are only Mexican? There are huge numbers of WHITE immigrants from eastern europe comming to America. Indeed most by legal means.

Immigration is not the problem. The problem is illegal immigration, ie people who sneak across the border illegally. Think about it: the very first thing they do when they get here is break the law. They refuse to learn our language or assimilate into our culture. They don't pay into the tax system, but they sure reap the benefits.

When my great grandparents came to the US, they waited at Ellis Island until they were permitted entry. They spoke Yiddish only when they didn't want their children to know what they were saying. They learned to become Americans, and expected no special treatment.

I am a mut amoung muts. On my maternal great grand mother's side, her father was from the Netherlands, her mother was a Cherokee. They were not accepted by any side. The whites hated them, the Dutch immigrants hated them and the Cherokee hated them. He came to this country after filling out the appropriate paperwork and getting permission from both his homeland and this country.
On my paternal side, my great grandparents fled the Nazis as they entered the Netherlands. They too filed the appropriate paperwork. My Great Uncle Bill was the first to arrive. This government made him a deal that if he would serve as an interpreter in the Dutch East Indies, after the war, he could stay and gain his citizenship. He held his end of the bargain and at war's end, was shipped back to Europe. It took almost ten more years to come back. And, he did it legally. In the end, they traded in their religious beliefs and became Methodists. How's THAT for assymilation?
Having spent a great protion of my adulthood in third word scesspools, I understand the plight of those wanting to come here. They need to do things the right way. And become good, hardworking, productive, tax paying citizens.
Note to KeithR200. Having studied slavery in the US , you're way off the mark. If the Africans were kidnapped, the nappers, were the tribes with which they been warring for years. The white traders, were too fearful to venture too far inland. They made contact with those who had won the battles and "purchased" the enslaved from them. The Europeans only perpetuated what is STILL going on to this very day. Doesn't make any of it right. But, if you are going to tell the story, tell it with fact. And, the Latinos were immigrants as well. Who discovered what we now call Florida? and California? The French settled far to the north, the English in the middle, and the Spaniards in the south.

Because we need to be able to properly screen people when they come in for one. We don't want any more criminals, we have enough of our own. Yet, some people who come here choose to further break our laws and hurt our citizens. Health screening is a must. There are lots of communicable diseases out there, and it poses a serious health risk to our nation when we have foreign nationals in our country and we don't know what, if any, ailments they have. I'm sure you know this, but there are alot of people in this world that hate this country and mean us harm, effective screening will hopefully keep these people out.
Further, it is a matter of basic economics. Uncontrolled immigration is something we cannot afford. We must provide adequate resources for those currently living here, and we can no longer do that. Even the wealthiest of countries has a limit to the resources that they have, and they must manage them responsibly. At one point, we needed people to populate this new land, now we find ourselves in a position where we are quite a populous nation, and have to concern ourselves with sustainability. We have to concern ourselves with resource management and population control. This is why we must cap the amount of immigrants(which is a more generous number than any in the world), and not allow an at-will immigration process.

NOT A SNOWBALL'S CHANCE IN HELL! This country was built by LEGAL immigration! What part of ILLEGAL don't you understand? How can 20+ million illegal alien criminals that are here breaking our laws, and sponging off the taxpayer, be a positive thing? These criminals are not our responsibility! Most are the responsibility of Mexico since most come from Mexico. However, I don't give a hoot WHERE they come from (this is NOT about race). All illegals aliens should not be here. We don't need new laws. We MUST enforce our current laws!!!!

LEGAL immigration, in compliance with the laws of this country is fine. No problem with that at all. I helped an exchange student immigrate to this country a few years ago. Immigration helps us become stronger.

ILLEGAL immigration is showing contempt for the laws of this country and those people all need to be shipped back to their home country. We do not want people here who demonstrate they have no respect for our laws. We have enough problems already.

Oh here we go.....
Those immigrants came "lawfully" and they also didn't come waving a flag. In fact, they were eager to leave their flag behind so that they could be represented by the AMERICAN flag. They also all learned English so that American society could function and be productive. If today's immigrants were half as enthusiastic about being American as those immigrants were, everyone would be more accepting.

A person who is in this county legally is either here as a legal immigrant or has a “non-immigrant visa,” meaning a tourist, student, or temporary worker visa.

If someone enters our country by unlawful means, he is by law an illegal alien, not an illegal immigrant.

It all comes down to ignorance. Often people hate others they don't know or understand. Spend time with a immigrant family and you will find most are not lazy, and work VERY hard. Most want what we want: peace, security, decent homes, health, education etc... All the hatred and misunderstanding is so sad and disturbing.

Foolish person! The government does nothing to stop illegal immigrants and restricts legal immigrants who are educated and can contribute to society. Mt grandmother could speak six languages but I only learned one because, "We are Americans now and Americans speak English." Illegal immigrants, primarily Mexican, want me to be able to speak their language. There is nothing wrong with Spanish but there is something inherently wrong with someone who comes here because of the opportunities here and brings the culture that caused them to illegally come here.

Many people have learned the English language and studied hard to become an American legally. Why should we let people who have already broken our law, who even want to change our language become American without going through the proper channels?
