I work at a preschool where we have children ages 18 months to 5 years. The 18 month olds (the kids in the toddler class) nap from around 12:30 to 3:00. The 2 year old class sleeps from 1:00-3:00 and the 3 year old class sleeps from 1:30 to 2:45ish. I think it is very important for your 18 month old son to take a nap for a few hours each day. I know some parents said their children had problems sleeping at night after having a nap, but I think one factor of that could be napping at different times. It is very important for your child to be on a schedule. If he is, than giving him a nap around the same time each day should not throw off his nighttime sleep habits. If it does, try giving him a nap earlier in the day so by the time you want him to sleep at night he will be tired again. But I definately think a nap is very important during that stage of development. When children are that young each activity takes brain power and lots of energy, so without a nap by dinner time even if your child is acting perfectly fine, their understanding and reaction time will be slower because they need time to rest; by that time in the day their brains need to play catch up

My daughter got one nap a day after lunch time. Some times a short AM nap if she was up late the night before for some reason. Good luck with the whole nap thing as your son gets older.

Alyssa is 14 months old and goes back and forth between a one nap day and a two nap day. She's kind-of in between being ready to give up a nap but developmentally they're usually ready to drop one of their naps, most often the morning nap, by 18 months.

My daughter is 2 years old and does not take a nap. I stopped giving her a nap when she was about 20 months. If she took a nap she would not go to bed until 2am! If you let him take a nap only let him sleep maybe a half hour so he wont be fussy and that will make it easier for him to go to bed at a decent hour.

I think it depends on the child. My last son never had naps at that age or he wouldn't go to sleep at night until 2 in the morning. His older brother napped twice during the day at that age. I would suggest just watching your child and putting him/her down to sleep when they seem tired.

the very comparable factor befell to me once I took my wee lady to toddler communities............... the mummy merely sat there yapping jointly as her daughter become pulling and tugging and being a sprint brat and my daughter did not understand what to do and have been given upset !!! I too informed the wee lady to provide up it and it become not super. i finished up not desirous to circulate back through fact i gave the impression to be the only one stricken approximately my childs behaviour. i understand toddlers combat and do those style of issues even with the undeniable fact that it is the mothers and fathers duty to maintain an eye fixed on them and instruct them good from incorrect. I merely waited and positioned her right into a pre-college nursery while she become 2 for a pair of hours two times a week. I merely could not cope with looking at my daughter upset and now i don't could through fact she's in a supervised enviroment that would not tollerate that style of behaviour. that is somewhat severe priced yet certainly very well worth the money.

2 naps is fine. You could lay him down a couple of hours after breakfast and a couple after lunch. After dinner he should be pooped enough to sleep through the night.

My son was taking only one at that age. It really got to be too much of a hassle to ge him down for that last afternoon nap.
Plus, he started sleeping much better at night (longer sleep time) and, I was able to enjoy more of his company!

One good long nap is good enough. But if he needs to lay down again and rest for a half hour or so, that's fine too.
