I don't know if it has any truth in it, but when I used to get them as a child, I was told it was lack of vitamine C.
(Could be they were trying to make me eat more fruit though ....)

No they are not a precursor to other ulcers.
A mouth ulcer (from Latin ulcus) is the name for the appearance of an open sore inside the mouth caused by a break in the mucous membrane or the epithelium on the lips or surrounding the mouth. The types of mouth ulcers are diverse, with a multitude of associated causes including: physical or chemical trauma, infection from microorganisms or viruses, medical conditions or medications, cancerous and sometimes nonspecific processes. Once formed, the ulcer may be maintained by inflammation and/or secondary infection

Do you mean canker sores? Canker sores occur when you bite the inside of your mouth...they are not actually ulcers. They become infected because the inside of the human mouth is filled with bacteria...they say a dogs mouth is cleaner than a human mouth because of all of the natural antibodies a dog has. I was getting a lot of canker sores and someone told me to rinse my mouth with a capful of peroxide every day. I have not had a canker sore since...even with biting the inside of my mouth.

I use to get them bad years ago and I believe I got after I ate too much chocalate or sweets (candy } I believe that the additives in these things and other foods can trigger them. I dont know why but I suppose its some kind of allergic reaction or somthing.

Usually means you've had food with a lot of citric acid. It happens to me if I have a lot of orange juice or pineapple juice.
