Not sure what to do , my husband passed away recently after a 2 year battle with cancer.Leaving behind myself and our two minor children.
In his obituary I had asked for money in lieu of flowers to help with financial costs.
His parents have received money from relatives.
They carried no financial burden for him.
Should the money come to me and the children?
Some people insist it should and I just don't know.

Thank you
Deb

Yes, it should definetly come to you and your children. Unless the parents intend to pay for all the funeral exoenses.

The money should be given to the children to help with future education cost or to help maintain them in a suitable fashion while raising them. You have lost his income and the money that he would be using to provide for his children. I don't know who was responsible for the funeral expenses but these monies could be used to help defray these cost as well when the family is economically needy. His parents should be putting that money towards their grandchildren well being but I would not make an issue out of it since it would just result in ill feelings towards you and possible the children. I am sorry for your loss and I realize that this must be causing you additional pain I encourage you to go and get some bereavement counseling for you and the children as this will help with the process and also help deal with the resentment towards your in laws. God bless.

I often wondered that. I assumed it went directly to the charity of choice (Cancer society in this case). Are his parents that insensitive that they do not know that the money should be going to you and those children? What are they saying about it? Are they possibly waiting until all of it is collected to give to you in a lump sum? That is awful but sitting back is not going to assist you in feeding your children. Go to them.

I am so terribly sorry. I neglected to extend my condolences to you and to your children for your loss. God bless all of you.
