If it is only during the winter, her is suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, more commonly known as SAD. It is due to lack of sunlight and the treatment is artificial sunlight. He can get a light box that has special lights to imitate sunlight. His insurance might even pay for it.

Depression is caused by a drop in seratonin levels. Seratonin is naturally produced from aerobic exercise. Maybe he is depressed because he is not outside exercising, and his seratonin levels have dropped.
