G'day TC,

Thank you for your your question.

Cooke is an English name and is a variant of Cook. The name is derived from the occupation. The name is most common in the UK and countries settled by the English such as the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The explorer was Captain James Cook. The most famous Cookes are soul singer Sam Cooke and broadcaster Alistair Cooke.

I have attached my sources for your reference.

Regards

Many last names came from professions. For example: In the colonial days. The Names Sawyer and Pittman came from their professions. When cutting wood in the old days it took two people to run the saw. One man on top Called the sawyer and one man on the bottom (or in the pitt) called the pittman.
So from this I surmise that the surname Cooke may have come from ancestors who where-- What else?---Cooks.
You can probably find that name in most English speaking countries.
