By looking at his/her teeth, eyes, joints, and health wise. So basically all by appearance they can get a guess on how old he/she is.
Like with my dog they vet thinks she is between 2 and 3 years old, you can never get an exact age on your dog unless you've had him/her since he/she was a pup.

I believe they look at body size, breed, and teeth. The dog's teeth help tell the vet how old the dog is & they provide a great deal of information regarding a dog's health.

Usually they look at their teeth. If they are very white the dog is young if they have a lot of plaque built up on them they are pretty old.

This is soooooooooo obvious!
The vet asks the dog.
We all know how smart our dogs are don't we?
The dog will woof once for each year.
If you dog is as smart as mine he/she will tap her paw for additional months.

They can just make a better *GUESS* than the average "boob-in-the-street" by looking at the TEETH! and eyes & general condition.
