Anyone can answer, but I'm Jewish, so if you could tell me the Jewish view on this, that would be great.

Many Christians would say that you are using Gods name for no good purpose. (in vein) I maintain that God does not have a literal name and that is not a good example of breaking that commandment.

If one wants to believe that saying "oh my god" is using the lords name in vain I would respect that and not say it around them. Is that really what the Bible or Torah teach? Not really. I think we can find a lot worse things of people doing out there than saying "oh my God." Especially in a world where we kill fully grown babies ready to come out of the mothers womb in the name of "parental choice" or "family planning."

I say Jesus Christ a lot, when I am mad,or scared, such as when I get attacked by dogs which is frequent ,I am a mailman .and oh yeah I am Catholic.
So I guess it is how you say it,in your tone of voice.
I hate when I hear a "valley girl" slang saying "oh my God". it drives me up a wall for some reason.

Generally it falls into the "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain" commandment. So, I would say it depends on context. If you are saying it casually, not intending to communicate with God, then I would say it probably is.

So many people say it when they are shocked or excited with no meaning behind it, throwing his name around like it's any old name. I'd say it's swearing and we should watch how we use his name.

I, too, am Jewish & I refrain from saying that. I'd rather be safe & wrong than say it & find out it IS swearing.

In Islam its not good to swear unless you mean it

2006-11-10 09:03:44 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

It's profanity, technically.

To be clear, this is only true if you're using the Lord's name in vain. If you are truly crying out to God, you're not swearing.
