There are more than 20 people driving in Ireland who are 100+, more power to your mother, you need a medical certificate to say she is fit to drive, but she doesn't need to retake her test.

Hi Kass, This is a difficult question. They do have to take an eye test every time they renew their license. I think some states do require them to test at a certain age.. At the same time, I worry just as much about our young drivers. They are charged a higher insurance premium because of the high fatality accidents they have and also because they cause far more wrecks than the elderly do. The young people usually have a car load of kid's with them when they wreck, meaning more injuries. Very seldom would you see a senior citizen with a car load of seniors drinking and driving recklessly while under the influence of alcohol. I quit driving when my family thought it best, years ago. I turned in my drivers license, when it was up for renewal and I also shed some tears, but I knew they were right. We always watched a film and took a hand written test in order to get a discount on our insurance but that was not mandatory. This question comes up often and it seems there isn't a realistic answer for this question, because we don't know - who and what age driving become difficult for the elderly . I wish there were. Very good question. djd.

i believe so, the dvla should of been in touch , but it wont hurt to give them a ring..... and make sure cos if she has been driving and she hasnt got a valid license then her insurance wont be worth the paper its written on

when you reach the age of 80 should you contemplate starting driving? will you be another Sunday driver or will you end up forgetting where you are going & driving the wrong way up the m11?
