I'm a broke college student...w/student insurance that just offers a small discount for seeing an eye doctor. My eyes feel strained when I look @ the computer & read. I've always had perfect vision except for this. I do get up & take a break away from the pc often, but it doesn't help. I work @ an office where I get extra exposure to the computer, so that doesn't help. Do the glasses you see @ Border's (& such) work for eye strain?? Or do I need to go to the eye doctor?

Thanks

You sure can. Just go to your local pharmacy and they usually have a selection of certain strengths. Some are 2X some are 2.5X etc. Basically they are just magnifying glasses in a frame. But, if you want more precise reading glasses an Optomitrist will be able to help you. I would try the Pharmacy glasses first. Grab a magazine off the rack and take it by where they have the glasses. They are usually by the eye contact cleaning chemicals. Take a pair of glasses and try reading the magazine. You might have to try on a few different pairs until you find a pair that fits and is at the correct magnification for you. If you still have problems see an Optomitrist. But, try the pharmacy pair first. OK, take care and good luck.

It won't damage your eyes, but it can decrease the amount of time you read. Those Cheapies are the same power in each side. Some people are fortunate enough to have the same prescription in each eye, but most don't. So if you have +2.00 readers and your prescription is +2.00 right and +2.75 left, your left eye would be under corrected and not focus at the same point. The opposite would be if you had a +2.75 reader, the right eye would then be over corrected. For short term use, (store, mail) they are usually fine, but for long term reading you may find your eyes fatigue and decrease your reading time.

If you're talking about eye strain from a monitor get a filter for the screen or just wear lightly tinted sunglasses. Yahoo! used to sell glasses for people who worked with computers a few years ago. Programmers will often wear sunglasses with a UV filter when they're doing marathon codework.

Chances are though it's not eye strain you may have astigmitism.

You don't need a prescription to get reading glasses. Go to Walmart or a dollar store and try some out. Test them out by reading the labels on a jar.
Good luck

You can go to your local drugstore. They sell cheap eyeglasses there. There are various strengths. Try them on and see which works for you.
