No..alcohol and gambling are forbidden. When one gambles, they can get addicted to it. They lose, they continue playing to win their money back. They win, they think they are capable to win even more money and become greedy. Alcohol causes a loss in concentration. When one drinks alcohol, he or she can not pray because they can not concentrate on their prayer. It can also cause people to become violent and insulting, which is not decent of a muslim. So, no.
The Noble Qur'an - al-Baqarah 2:219
They ask you (O Muhammad ) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs." Thus Allâh makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought

Strict Muslims will not drink alcohol, nor will they partake in gambling. However, does the most devout C of E christian always go to church and help out at the summer fete? Does the Roman Catholic always abstain from sex before marriage? These rules, like a lot of our own, can be taken with a pinch of salt or a large g & t!

NO - absolutely NOT. I have a real close friend who was born in Syria and of course is Muslim. Absolutely no alcohol of any kind, no pork, no gambling and just to add their Koran does not justify suicide either.

The Quran says that it is forbidden to become intoxicated. I suppose you could drink (but why bother?) as long as you don't become drunk. Also, gambling is prohibited.

No. They are not.
The answer to all of these issues is no. Allah has said in the Qur'an, "Through intoxicants and games of chance, Shaytan seeks only to cause enmity and hatred among you, and to turn you away from the remembrance of Allah and from Salah." (5:91)
The blessed Prophet once said, "Every intoxicant is Khamr and every khamr is forbidden." (Muslim) So every intoxicant such as wine, beer, drugs, whiskey, narcotic leaves, etc... is forbidden.

Many religions place restrictions on the freedom of their followers. That's just part of the fun of it, I suppose.
