Ironically.......mountains are nearer to the sun and should be hotter than the plains. Isnt it....or what is the reason for this?

Mountains are at a higher elevation than plains and it gets cooler as you go up. It also is brighter on mountains because you are closer to the sun. I'm not sure but it could be that it is not warmer because the air is thinner at higher elevations (less oxygen) and up there it is farther from the radiant heat that arises off the earth as the sun beats on it.

Actually there is this surreal place in Northern Siberia where the temperature can drop to minus 60 centigrade.This is because the area is in a valley or trough and with no wind the cold air being denser than the warm air sinks into this depression making it a bit chilly in the mornings.I'm sure the coldest recorded temperature in the USA was in a valley many years ago.

We're still 93 million miles away from the sun whether your on the plains or on the mountain. However, it is the altitude. The higher from sea level, the lower the temperature.

the reason for the colder temps are the fact that when you go higher in elevation, the air becomes thinner and harder to breath. and since theres no air in space the temperature gets colder as you go higher. somewhere right around 50-70 miles above sea level it is permanently freezing (maybe its 50,000 ft)
this you can tell by seeing the jet airplanes flying over and they are trailing the vapor from their engines

well not really see at plains there are more molecules in the air and surroundings allowing for more heat but when you get up into the mountains there are less molecules meaning less heat at that hight
