Sounds like ear wax problem. I use peroxide and just drop some in my ear but your going to think your head is going to explode with all the snap, crackling and popping going on as the peroxide disolves the wax. But another person here suggested ear candles I know of a lot of old timers that swear by this so the choice is yours

I think you are getting older. There is also a sound produced by bones rubbing together, especially neck bones or jaw bones and the TMJ. The crackling can be caused by higher than normal pressure within the fluid filled parts of the inner ear. The antihistimines for allergy reduces this pressure, I think.

No pain? Sounds like you have a lot of dirt in there. My suggestion would be to get a couple of ear candles. Yes, ear candles. It's wonderful and will gently suck all the dirt and excess wax out of your ears. No medicine and no liquids. You never want to put liquid in your ears. Makes it worse.
Go to a health food store and get some. They are like $2 each.
Here are some instructions. They can also give them to you at the store.
